This house for a farm worker was designed for a farm near cromwell. The elevated site commands a view down the Lowburn Valley which the large windows and doors open towards.
The northerly aspect allows the house to make full use of passive solar design principles, with concrete floors, double glazing and deep overhangs to contol summer sun. Natural ventilation is also promoted for summer cooling.
Clean and simple forms relate well to nearby sheds and farm storage buildings, with a low lying profile that sits into the landscape. The materials of galvanised, corrogated steel, concrete block and plywood are also robust and appropriate for the site.
Care has been taken to make the best use of the floor area and to allow for flexible use of the space. The bedroom can be part of the living area when not in use through oversize sliding doors allowing long views across the house and extending the apparent size of each space.
